Twenty one years ago, a family of 5 sisters and 2 brothers joined hands with their parents Mr Subramaniam Pillai and Mrs Jeevratnam Pillai and took a solemn pledge to transform the lives of the children around them through education. Thus was born Sungrace School in Wanowrie on Salunke Vihar Road, Pune. A humble endeavor, that strove to reach out to those children who were denied education simply because there was no school in the neighborhood, or because they could not gain admission to the large convent schools, or simply because they could not afford to pay the high fees of private institutions. In 1989, the parents, Subramaniam and Jeevratnam Pillai, laid the foundation for Sungrace School on their small plot at Wanowrie. The school had no recognition, no affiliation and no funding from the government or any other body. Both parents passed away the following year, leaving daughter Dayavati Pillai to take on the mantle of principal of the 7-student school. The family formed a trust in the name of their parenta known as ""JEEV SUBRAMANIAM MEMORIAL EDUCATIONAL TRUST"" All the five sisters were experienced teachers and as the school started growing, they gave up their jobs in various reputed schools to selflessly devote their time and energy to Sungrace School. In 1996, the strength of the school had grown to over 50 students. During the same year, after much effort, the school acquired government recognition, much to the joy of the parents and children.
