History

When Ms. Oliphant came to India in 1920, from Delhi, she moved to Dehradun, a quiet town nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. It was here that she decided to start a preparatory school as the town had a pleasant climate and idyllic surroundings.

Welham got its first admission on 15th January 1937. By 1938, there were thirty borders and twenty day scholars. Welham Boys School firmly represents its motto “From Strength to Strength” as a reminder of the humble yet courageous beginnings of the boarding school.

Academics

Initially recognised as a preparatory school with several buildings & students, the school is now a full-fledged boarding school. It prepares boys for examinations under CBSE. The boarding school assures that its students have a strong foundation in academic concepts and languages. To take care of the mental and emotional growth of the students, school offers a variety of self-expression activities like drawing, painting, clay modelling, carpentry & craft.

Infrastructure

Located in the foothills of Himalayas, in a quiet city of Dehradun, school offers a perfect ambience for learning and growth of the children. Spread over 30 acres, the Welham Boys School is home to 60 recorded species of birds, attracted to the flowering trees & shrubs on campus. Over the years, the boarding school has upgraded its infrastructure to provide students with state of the art facilities. Today, the school is an epitome of modernity and advancements in the education sector.

To enhance the thinking and analytical skills the boarding school has come up with a concept of, ‘The Learning Resource Center.’ This Learning Resource Center ensures to have specific corners dedicated specifically for different activities like reading room, AV room, Language labs, art department and design technology workshop.  Students are encouraged to incorporate the habit thinking and experimenting in this wing of the boarding school.

The classrooms, staff rooms, laboratories, offices & stationery store are located at the senior & middle school areas of the campus. Junior school classes are carried out in the “White House” owing to its historical importance and significance to the school.

Facilities & Activities

Being a believer in the overall growth of its students, the Welham Boys School ensures proper training & encouragement for students interested in sports. Various fields and courts have been established to keep the spirit of sports burning.

For all major events, ceremonies, plays and dramas, quizzes etc. there is a huge multipurpose hall, known as the Activity Center. The center includes a shooting range, a tuck shop & a gym.

The students are offered nutritionally balanced meals from a variety of cuisines from a modern & well equipped kitchen. The Bethany dining hall is the common area where the boarding school takes its meals. Cleanliness & hygiene are top priority for the staff at the Welham Boys School.

The boarding school Infirmary is well equipped with all the essential medical facilities and equipment along with a minor operation theatre. This ensures that students suffering from illnesses and injuries are well cared for while they are away from their homes.

The school follows the Child centric teaching learning pedagogy, where students are encouraged to understand the basic concepts. Project based teaching; Content Centric teaching & Activity Oriented teaching form the base of the teaching method at Welham Boys School.

The Research Lab & Learning Resource Center forms a key aspect of the experience at the boarding school along with experimentation based learning. The school ensures that students are guided to be independent learners, who can grasp concepts from their environment.
