The aim and drive of the school is to empower the children with the most efficient technological proficiency so that they may function with clarity and efficiency in the modern world, and, far more important, to create the right environment so that the child may develop fully as a complete human being. The Sahayadri school, while not encouraging competition in the form currently accepted by society, endeavours to create an atmosphere where students can excel.
History
Established in the year 1995 the vision for a school in Western India became reality by the efforts of late Shri Achyut Patwardhan. Krishnamurti had been coming to Mumbai from 1948 to 1985 giving public talks and interviews. He had also been to Pune on three occasions. The region had felt and expressed the need for a Krishnamurti School in Pune.
Academics
Sahayadri School is affiliated by the CISCE (Council for the Indian schools Certificate Examination, New Delhi). Classes are intentionally small to provide individualised contact between teacher and students. Here student motivation and participation become essential. An expectation of courtesy, kindness, and mutual respect helps to create an atmosphere where students can take the initiative required for active learning.
Infrastructure
The school is located on Tiwai Hill, a plateau 770 m above sea level, overlooking the Chas-Kaman Dam in Pune.
A well-stocked library with carefully selected books ensures adequate opportunity for reading. Well-equipped laboratories, computer facilities and audio-visual equipment are other resources that further enrich learning.
Activities
All students from classes 4 to 8 receive formal training in classical music. Evening hobby classes in vocal Hindustani music, tabla and sitar are offered to interested students. The program for music also includes two or more concerts in vocal and instrumental classical Indian music as well as an informal musical evening each term.
Housed in a beautifully designed Art Complex, the Art Faculty provides a richly creative ambience for learning a wide variety of arts and craftwork. Children grow in their aesthetic sensibilities through learning sketching, painting, batik, tie and dye, pottery, clay work and weaving. In addition, workshops are held in bamboo craft, puppetry, glass painting, mask making, sculpture, Madhubani painting, and so on.
Sahyadri has a vigorous physical education programme which includes facilities for a wide range of games. Football, basketball, cricket, tennis, badminton, hockey, softball, volleyball, throw ball, handball and table tennis are regularly played on campus. Strength and stamina are enhanced through a morning exercise program. Games like kabbadi and kho-kho are also encouraged and actively played. Besides formal games, hikes, treks and outdoor camps are a regular feature at school.
