MGD Jaipur – A pioneer boarding school

Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ School or MGD was founded in the year 1943, located in Jaipur, India. The boarding school was established by and named after Rajmata Gayatri Devi of Jaipur. It is a pioneer in the segment of all-girls school that has been established in the state of Rajasthan.

History

The boarding school took birth on 12 August 1943. The summer of 1940, saw the nuptial bond of Maharaja of Jaipur Sawai Man Singhji Bahadur and Princess Ayesha Gayatri Devi, of Cooch Behar. The princess was the beloved daughter of the Maharaja and Maharani Indira Deviji, of Cooch Behar. Her worries regarding the education of the local court women led her and Bahadur to establish the boarding school. Bahadur told the Prime Minister Sir Mirza Ismail, and the Education and Finance Minister, Rao Bahadur Amarnath Atal, to allot the land and design the school. It started with 24 girls and Lilian G. Lutter as the Principal on the lines of the British public school pattern.

Academics

MGD was the first girls’ public boarding school to be accepted as a member of the Public School Council of India’ Conference (IPSC). In 1950, MGD became a center for the Cambridge Examination for Jaipur. In 1962 the school shifted to the Indian School Certificate Board.MGD is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi (CBSE) and offers today education to girls from class I to XII. It prepares students for the All India Secondary and Senior School Certificate Examinations, for the purpose of which the school has an excellent team of well-qualified and trained staff.

Classes I to V follow the XSeed curriculum of iDiscoveri.

Infrastructure

The boarding school is located on the Sawai Ram Singh Road, in the center of the city and spreads across 26 acres. The institute stands firm till date with over 3000 students from all parts of India. Many students of the boarding school which are residents on campus, studying from Classes I to XII.

The campus consists of various defined amenities like, gardens, lawns, sports fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, Cricket field, a stadium cum auditorium and a swimming pool.

There are eight boarding houses, each for age groups – Anand, Lillian Hurst, Ashiyana, Deepshikha, Maharani Indira Devi Bhawan, Rani Vidya Devi Bhawan, and the teacher’s residence – Nivedita House, Principal’s and Administrator officer’s residence.

The school has a widespread dining hall which caters excellent quality food to around 400 girls and teachers at a time. The school has also provided the facility of on campus salon to the older students of higher classes as the management believes in the overall grooming of the students.

Activities

The students are divided into four houses named after notable women achievers: Madame Curie: red, Helen Keller: blue, Florence Nightingale: green, Sarojini Naidu: orange.

Inter-house competitions vary from cultural, art and craft activities to music and dance as well as debates and quizzes. In sports, the students participate in inter-house and inter-school sports competitions and represent the city and state at national and international levels.

MGDians participate in inter-house sports championships such as athletics, basketball, swimming, running, badminton, tennis, judo competition etc. A sports day with a marching parade is held annually. MGD hosts and organises the annual IPSC Sports Meet and other inter-school sports competitions.

Pawas has worked in companies like Wipro and NIIT and Educomp. At NIIT Pawas was instrumental for leading and the design and subsequent sales of NIIT's homegrown Learning Management System to institutes of higher education in Singapore. Pawas was leading Universal Learn Today a school advisory and consulting business of the India Today Group.
