Reading Time: 2 minutes

As the classroom learning resumes back to ‘normal’ after the long phase of virtual learning induced by COVID-19 pandemic, there is a completely evolved dynamics on the teaching and learning strategies. Digital learning has become a trend incorporated by teachers to make learning fun and easy and develop the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of the students. Beyond the academic development, the educational journey is a holistic one with equivalent focus on sports and extra-curricular activities. The holistic growth of a child also includes incorporating Emotional intelligence or Emotional Quotient (EQ) in the learning strategies which can be an add-on for not just the current academic journey but also for the future career prospects.

So, what exactly is Emotional Quotient or Emotional Intelligence? What role does it play to build the academic journey of the students? Let’s find out.

Understanding EQ:

In the fundamental essence, Emotional Quotient or Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and interact with the emotions of self as well as other individuals involved. Emotional Intelligence can be classified into four aspects –

– Consciousness towards the emotions

– Thinking and reasoning out with the emotions perceived

– To discern emotions and the evolving changes with it

– Monitoring and management of emotions (self and others)

However emotional intelligence is a very complex concept which goes beyond the aforesaid defined parameters. It is an ardent task to comprehend emotional intelligence, until observed in action. Like, for instance,a teacher explaining a complicated chapter with patience and real-life examples also showcases Emotional Intelligence. A student unable to coordinate in a team and quits the team-work based project displays a low EQ.

So, what is the relevance of emotional intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence can affect several aspects of life, from academic performance to job prospects. EQ is considered equivalent to cognitive intelligence in academics, as management of emotions can make the grades better and enhance the self-confidence. This is also because emotionally intelligent students can effectively deal with any negative situation which could otherwise disrupt the academic performance. Emotional Intelligence helps to manage stress during exams, manage concentration, overcome disappointment over a lower grade or marks  and can also easily identify self when in anxiety over an assignment and act accordingly instead of procrastination.

For subjects like English, Drama, Creative Arts, History, emotional intelligence makes it easy to understand as it requires influencing the human emotions. A good EQ also helps in networking skills and build strong relationships with the teachers and fellow students.

How to build Emotional Intelligence?

To have a strong emotional quotient, the first step is to assess and identify. Here are a few tips to work on emotional intelligence as follows:

– Observe the feelings and understand the reaction to different situations

– Make an attempt to anticipate your emotions

– Maintain a journal and pen the thoughts

– Change your perspective about failures, and consider it as opportunities and a learning lesson

– Practise Affirmations and keep a positive attitude

– Respond politely and consciously to any conflicts

It is not an overnight task to build a strong emotional quotient. It is a skill which grows over time with practice and patience along with conscious efforts over the years.
